Music Blog Post

Nineties: I would add Nirvana too this list because their music produced in the 90s strongly aligns with the vibe of the time period. I'd compare them to the link from this section to Radiohead because of the similar instrument-heavy solos and abstract messages in the lyrics. Smells Like Team Spirit is a prime example of what I am describing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikeg Electronic: I believe that some of Avicii's songs belong in this category because of the many club mixes that he created. They have a strong DJ feel to them that makes you want to dance like David Guetta's songs mentioned in the blog. Avicii's song Levels is a good modern representation of the electronic, club vibe that I experienced while browsing through this section. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ovdm2yX4MA Punk: Blink 182 reminds me of a similar punk sound as The Ramones. They always tell stories within their songs and the tonality of their singing voices almost simulate talk

#MeToo Video Art

I am deeply inspired by the #MeToo movement and I believe that everyone should be aware of its importance. I used a pink tint in order to add feminine connotations (although men are also a part of the movement, just not as much). The overlapping audio and video attempts to display the prevalence of this issue and emphasize the fact that sexual assault happens more than one would think. I hope that this video inspires people to speak out and support the movement. I included the credits in the description when I posted it on YouTube, here is the full list: Til It Happens To You, Instrumental - Lady Gaga Halsey Speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjRnyFBexq0 Ford Opening Statement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfc5aG1friU&t=3s Rose McGowan Interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5rNnqSG-io&t=19s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW3KD4kqqug Gabrielle Union interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ka8rXRKeUpI&t=103s Lady Gaga Speech Clip: https://www.you

Sticky Note Performance Piece

Due to my unfortunately high amount of social anxiety, I utilized the anonymity aspect of the Guerrilla Girls. Although unlike them I decided to spread words of love and encouragement for finals season rather than try to be exclusively political. I went out of my way to ensure that no one knew the notes were from me by waiting until I was the only one in the restroom. There are many days that I find myself looking around for a sign that things are going to be okay, and I truly hope that this project gave someone that satisfaction. I covered the women's bathrooms in Straz, Morsani, ICB/Starbucks, Cass, and Vaughn. If I was to go back and do this again I would have tried to use my DSLR camera rather than my phone, use more direct quotes, and include off-campus restrooms as well.

Xerox Project

Image
For the self portrait I decided to use my polaroid pictures to take close pictures of my face. At first, I wanted to take nine pictures of my face that came together to make a bigger picture, but they ended up not looking the way I intended. After realizing that I decided to make it more abstract and form pictures of my hand into a sun shape. For some reason, a majority of my art work tends to have some relation to the sun. I included the pictures of my face in the center of the sun to represent how I see myself. I have come a long way in the last few years in regards to my self esteem and happiness in general so I wanted to put myself in the center as if I'm the light of my own life. When I was in the line for                                                                                        Starbucks, I realized that I needed to add another aspect to the design and impulsively took 15+ sweet & low packets to add the effect of outer space and clusters of stars. Grid Project

Image
I ran into many issues trying to create this grid project. Illustrator both on my laptop and the school computers repeatedly frozen and would not open my saved project. Given this, I decided to use the application created by YungJake that allowed me to quickly utilize different emojis and draw them on top of my pixelated image. I used about five different shades of brown emojis, four grey ones, two black ones, three blue ones, and three green ones. It was incredibly time consuming but I am glad it at least resembles my dog in the end.

Importance of the Vacuum Tube

The vacuum tube, also called the electron tube, is a sealed enclosure used to control the flow of electrons between the metal electrodes in the air tight tube. These tubes were crucial in the development of the radio because of their ability to amplify weak currents and generate radio-frequency power for radio and radar. The cathode ray tube was the primary mechanism used for image display in older analog televisions. In a CRT, the negative terminal is referred to as a cathode and is the heated filament. The ray is the stream of electrons that are exerted by the heated cathode inside the vacuum in a glass tube. Due to the fact that electrons are negative and the anode is positive, it attracts them and focuses them into a tight beam. The image is able to be transferred to the flat screen because of this tight, accelerated beam of electrons flying through the vacuum towards the screen coated in illuminating phosphor that makes the screen glow a certain color; white, blue, green or red.

Seasonal Flipbook

Song: Young Volcanoes - Fall Out Boy I am not an artist whatsoever, so creating this was a struggle for me. Even though I came to Florida for college, I still love the idea of having four seasons so I decided to make my drawings align with that theme. I chose the book Emma simply because that is my name and many of my interests are displayed within the flipbook. I enjoy watching sunrises (when I get up that early) and especially sunsets so I began with that. The snowman and Christmas tree represented my favorite time of year even thought it has the worst weather. I decided to build the snowman up gradually in order to make him seem more animated and represent the snowman building process.

Broadway

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with most of the shows mentioned in this blog but it was very entertaining to watch through the video clips and experience even a small portion of new shows. I personally have seen Wicked twice, Into the Woods , and Legally Blonde Off Broadway. I had the experience to see Annie  on Broadway in Manhattan a few summers ago and that was by far the best show experience I have ever had. While it was not particularly my favorite show, it was simply an amazing experience being at a legitimate Broadway show compared to shows I have gone to in Omaha or Kansas City in the past. The talent of the performers such as Idina Menzel, Liza Minnelli, Gwen Verdon and countless other Broadway greats blows me away. I also really appreciate the complexity of the set design, costuming, and blocking of Broadway shows. The shows are similar to very elaborate puzzles that require every detail to be perfect in order for the execution to be perfect. In filmmaking, there is so m

Madama Butterfly

Pjotr Sapegin's ARIA struck a nerve with me that I have not been able to shake. While being a very simply made animation, the message was very complex. Before I started studying film, I was a very passive viewer that did not realize the extent that sound affects a story. I could quite literally feel every emotion that Aria was experiencing based off of the music alone. The typical melodramatic film relies on dialogue and much more minimal sound effects to express emotions while this opera and many similar to it only need visuals and music. I also was deeply moved by the ending of the story. How is a puppet to die? The emotions that she is feeling seem to be projected onto her by her makers in order to appear relatable as a character. The ending gave me the feeling associated with breaking the fourth wall despite there not being any dialogue. She slowly removes her human-like characteristics in hopes of removing her human-like emotions that have been projected onto her. This was

The Unconscious Mind

The idea of our brain acting like a parliament interested me because I never really thought about how inherently physical the arguments I have with myself are. While we as humans are relatively aware that we have a subconscious, I do not think most people understand the extent to which our actions are controlled by parts of the brain that we will never have full control of. For example, when you are deciding whether or not to tell someone a secret, one parliamentary system of neurons is competing with the other. How do you decide who wins? After thinking about this for awhile, I realized that the winning party typically varies for me. Originally I thought that the moral side of the brain would be the one that would rationalize and become victorious in such situations. However, in hindsight I realized that the inherent stress of holding onto a secret has influenced my decision making more than I thought. Dr. Eagleman truly made me more conscious of my subconscious. He thoroughly explai

An Analysis of Pierre Huyghe

A majority of the artwork that I have ever seen has represented and reflected society. However, Pierre Huyghe completely creates its own world that does not quite fit into reality as we know it. I see his art as belonging in an alternate universe and the only way that it could be thoroughly understood would be in that universe. He utilizes many mediums such as neon lights, puppetry, film, and parades to create his worlds. In many ways I relate Huyghe's work to the Netflix series Black Mirror. Instead of reflecting society, a majority of the episodes create alternate universes that act as social commentary to the reality in which we live in. Examples of this commentary are their episodes about technology, the prison system, and modern entertainment. While Huyghe's art does not have as strong of a social commentary as Black Mirror, they are similar in their avant-garde style with the universes created within them. The lack of rules and regulations for artists and filmmakers today

The Body as a Medium

Art is fluid, art is diverse, and art is everywhere. They very idea of art being confined to simply a paintbrush and canvas is absurd. I see art every time that I walk outside and immerse myself in nature.  While I do not have much artistic talent outside of film, I am inspired by Marina Abramovic's avant-garde approach to art. The more that individuals appreciate the world around them, the more obvious it is that we are surrounded by works of art. When it comes to self expression, rules and restrictions do not apply like they do in the STEM subjects. Abramovic describes the studio as a seclusion that hindered her from truly connecting with the public. To her, it was ludicrous to even consider returning to the confines of classic mediums. While this does not mean that the typical mediums are basic or overused, it just means that the possibilities are endless when it comes to expressing yourself to the furthest extent. In many ways, I relate to this mindset. I have never been very t

Implementing Creativity into my Everyday Life

Dr. Cuero describes how children in modern day society spend a majority of their lives interacting with man-made material such as computers, cell-phones, tablets, and television. The reason in which this affects their creative development is by hindering their ability to observe and interact with nature. I do find myself spending too much time indoors compared to when I was in elementary school and that disconnect with nature has led to a sort of disconnect with the world around me. I began to appreciate my hometown less and get into the same routine which did not help my creative abilities. The quote "Ideas emerge by interacting with other ideas (or individuals through conversing)," resonated with me because the gradual decrease in human interaction that I have noticed myself falling into has played a bigger role in limiting my creative abilities than I once thought. The best way to strengthen an idea and create something wonderful is through human interaction and teamw
